|a Wobbly researcher Eleanor Walden interviews a Mr. Vogel, during a walking tour of the Olympic Club in Centralia, Washington. The Olympic Club was the sight of many meetings held by local lumber barons and railroad owners who would become embroiled in the infamous events of November 11, 1919. It is uncertain which Mr. Vogel is being interviewed on this recording. Art Vogel, a great poker player and no-nonsense force at the Olympic Club, started working there in 1924 and was made a partner in 1927. He remained active in its operation until 1961. Two other brothers, Paul and Charles M. (Chuck) were part-owners in the business. The Vogel family ran the Olympic Club until 1996 when it was bought out by McMenamins. Unfortunately, much of this recording is unintelligible, but a small portion reflects the flavor of the era. This recording was likely made in the summer of 1979 when Ms.Walden visited Lewis County to interview other residents about the massacre of 1919. |
