General Note:
Wesley Everest was born December 29, 1890 in Newberg, Yamhill County, Oregon and orphaned at the age of 14. He joined the I.W.W. at an early age and then was drafted into the U.S. Army Spruce Production Division in Vancouver, Washington, where he served for 16 months, spending considerable time in the stockade for refusing to salute the flag. He moved to Centralia in the spring of 1919 with a bundle of law books and a Colt revolver and was often seen wearing his army uniform around town. After the events of November 11, 1919 he was put in jail and eventually removed and lynched. No one was ever charged in his death. The top photo shows IWW members lowering Everest's grave into the ground a few days after his death. It lay unmarked until the late 1930's when a private citizen placed the marker in the photo below.
